In 1979, the U.S. Army drafted final specifications for a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), which was to replace all the tactical vehicles in the 1/4-ton to 5/4-ton range, namely the M151 quarter-ton jeeps, M561 Gama Goats, and the CUCVs, as one uniform “jack-of-all-trades” light tactical vehicle series, to better perform the roles of the impractically mixed fleet of outdated existing vehicles. Thanks to a battle proven track record spanning over three decades, a HUMVEE is a reliable off-road commodity! Under the hood is the venerable 6.2l diesel V8, that generates 150hp at 3,000rpm, backed by a three-speed automatic transmission with a two-speed, locking, chain-driven transfer case.
